Our History
Founded in 1991 by coaches Anthony James and Cynthia Smith‑Perkins, our club was built on a simple belief: when young athletes are supported, challenged, and inspired, they can achieve greatness.
Through his partnership with Mecklenburg Park and Recreation, Anthony ensured the Flights were a positive outlet for all Charlotte youth, with a particular focus on those underserved communities. During his 27 year tenure as head coach, he built the Charlotte Flights into one of the nation’s premier youth track and field programs.
From the very beginning, that vision was strengthened by the leadership of Alvin Woods, the club’s first president, who served from 1991 to 2017. Alvin played a pivotal role in establishing the organizational structure that still guides us today. Through his tireless fundraising efforts and commitment to building strong community relationships, he laid the foundation for the club’s long‑term success and growth.
In 2017, the presidency was passed to Lebraun Evans, who continues to lead with passion, dedication, and a drive to expand opportunities for every athlete. One year later, in 2018, Nigel Orr became Head Coach, bringing a fresh energy and innovative coaching approach while honoring the core values that have defined the program since its earliest days. Together, their leadership has ushered in a new era—one that blends tradition with forward‑thinking vision.
Over the decades, this strong foundation and evolving leadership have shaped a program known for excellence on and off the track. With more than 100 national champions, and countless stories of growth and achievement, our athletes consistently rise to the highest levels of youth track and field.
But medals are only part of our mission. We are dedicated to developing confidence, discipline, teamwork, and a lifelong love for sport. Hundreds of athletes earned college scholarships and some advanced to represent Team USA. But equally important are those who’s track experience provided them life skills to positively shape their futures beyond the sport. Every practice is an opportunity to grow. Every meet is a chance to shine.
Welcome to a community where hard work is celebrated, potential is nurtured, and champions—both athletic and personal—are made.
